Reviews and information can be found at Tripadvisor, and here are some excerpts:
-
“The Hill Club doesn’t pretend to be a five star hotel, but it has obviously decided to open its doors to tourists, … It has rules, such as the wearing of a jacket and tie in the evening. This didn’t worry me at all….”
This person was not happy: “The rooms are cold, and only supplied with a one-bar heater. The carpet is worn and even ripped in places. ” Can’t please everyone, but, “The rooms are enormous (could have fitted 5), the Chalet charming,”
“Entering the Hill Club is like stepping back in time. It’s like the colonial era never ended. It is a gentlemen’s club and unfortunately the staff seems to despise everyone who is not a gentleman - or worse, not even a man. ” Hmmm.
“The best way to view the Hill Club is as a themed attraction than a hotel. We stayed for one night and really liked it. The place is stuck in a bit of a time warp - but for us, that really added some charm.”
There you go.

According to the Wikipedia review, the membership in the club is “limited to British and Europeans”. I guess that cuts out us Americans, oh well.
The building itself is constructed of stone and timber. The club in Nuwara Eliya was founded in 1876 by British coffee planters.

Hello
Do you have 2 double rooms from the 15th of August to the 17th of August
Best regards
My wife and I stayed here twenty five years ago, and from what I have read it hasn’t changed at all, which is superb news. I always wanted to go back with my mountain bike. Now I would add to that a lap top and stay six months to write that book that everyone has in their heads. I cannot think of a better place, the service was brilliant, the atmosphere superb, the location excellent. I cannot conceive of a nicer place. Having just had to sit through ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ I thought I would see if this place had been bought by some multinational hotel chain and ruined. So pleased it remains unchanged.
SRI LANKANS MUST WORSHIP THE BRITISHERS AND TAMILS WHO TOILED AND SUFFERED TO DO ALL THESE………… today the F***** S******** to say all ours !
SHUT UP YOU RACIST B……..TARD
Indeed, a very special place.
I was at The Hill School Nuwara Eliya 1949-1951 (it is now a Military Barracks). I stayed at the Hill Club about 20 years ago and hope to stay there again. It has a certain decadent charm which many of us like. I think some of the critical comments are unjustified. I hope it stays largely as it always has been.
Your style is really unique compared to other folks I have read stuff from.
Thank you for posting when you’ve got the opportunity, Guess I will just bookmark this site.
My wife & I , Prof Ivor Jones,& daughter Dr Anne will be visiting Sri LANKA & would like to stay at the Hill Club as temporary members. As mentioned in LONELY PLANET . From 3rd November to 6th Nov. We have visited the club 2 years ago and would like to stay this time. The club has also been recommended by one of your members, Mr. Ajit Chitty.
This is not acceptable at all. Why Sri Lankans cannot visit a hotel in Sri Lanka?
Lahiru,
Because so called SRILANKAN should kept in proper place !
we got indipendent in 1948 and still you dont allow srilankans to enjoy the facilities, but all cant become a member, please change your rules and regulation and treat the srilankans as srilankans.

Mr.Ravi Ramanathan says that ” we got independent in 1948. “,May be he and his family must have got, but NOT THE MINORITY TAMILS who sacrificed their whole like to bring up this country CEYLON working with the previous rulers. Even Hill Club stands with a class as a result. !
Sooo true. There are many hotels and even luxury house rentals in Colombo, where it is explicitly stated that they are only meant for foreigners. Apartheid - present-day Sri Lankan style.
I currently checked into this old relic and find the rules onerous. They asked me to where a jacket and tie to hang out in the lobby. Thank goodness for the dvd collection; i’ll happily stay in my room.
please send me the hill club hotel manager’s details and contect no.
thank you
I called the Hill Club earlier today to inquire about making a reservation and was very ‘politely’ told that the HILL CLUB is only for members and foreign passport holders and NOT for locals!!!!!!!!!!! Apartheid ????
Enrico Pereira
Very Very Good !
They must keep it up.
Regards for this terrific post, I am glad I found this website by a search.
I wish more people would write blogs like this that are really fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.
Thanks!
I visited The Hill Club about 25 years ago. I recall it being very quiet, dull in fact and in need of a serious redecoration. My friend and I had a game or two of snooker on a moth eaten table, which had a sign declaring that the “First tear is 20,000 rupees”. When we asked how much the second one was you could have heard a pin drop.
It’s fortunate chilfren under 5 aren’t allowed in, they would be bored beyond belief in minutes.
