Reviews and information can be found at Tripadvisor, and here are some excerpts:

“The Hill Club doesn’t pretend to be a five star hotel, but it has obviously decided to open its doors to tourists, … It has rules, such as the wearing of a jacket and tie in the evening. This didn’t worry me at all….”

This person was not happy: “The rooms are cold, and only supplied with a one-bar heater. The carpet is worn and even ripped in places. ” Can’t please everyone, but, “The rooms are enormous (could have fitted 5), the Chalet charming,”

“Entering the Hill Club is like stepping back in time. It’s like the colonial era never ended. It is a gentlemen’s club and unfortunately the staff seems to despise everyone who is not a gentleman – or worse, not even a man. ” Hmmm.

“The best way to view the Hill Club is as a themed attraction than a hotel. We stayed for one night and really liked it. The place is stuck in a bit of a time warp – but for us, that really added some charm.”

There you go.

According to the Wikipedia review, the membership in the club is “limited to British and Europeans”. I guess that cuts out us Americans, oh well.

The building itself is constructed of stone and timber. The club in Nuwara Eliya was founded in 1876 by British coffee planters.

Sooo true. There are many hotels and even luxury house rentals in Colombo, where it is explicitly stated that they are only meant for foreigners. Apartheid – present-day Sri Lankan style.

I currently checked into this old relic and find the rules onerous. They asked me to where a jacket and tie to hang out in the lobby. Thank goodness for the dvd collection; i’ll happily stay in my room.

I called the Hill Club earlier today to inquire about making a reservation and was very ‘politely’ told that the HILL CLUB is only for members and foreign passport holders and NOT for locals!!!!!!!!!!! Apartheid ????

Regards for this terrific post, I am glad I found this website by a search.

  6. I wish more people would write blogs like this that are really fun to read. With all the fluff floating around on the net, it is rare to read a blog like this instead.

I visited The Hill Club about 25 years ago. I recall it being very quiet, dull in fact and in need of a serious redecoration. My friend and I had a game or two of snooker on a moth eaten table, which had a sign declaring that the “First tear is 20,000 rupees”. When we asked how much the second one was you could have heard a pin drop.

It’s fortunate chilfren under 5 aren’t allowed in, they would be bored beyond belief in minutes.
